Thermoelectric (TE) materials can contribute to solving the global energy crisis by recovering waste heat as usable electric energy. Single crystal p-type SnSe samples show an exceptionally high figure of merit (ZT) of ~2.6 at 923K along the b-axis due to a highly anharmonic bonding. However, it requires a long time for synthesis to obtain high-quality samples. So, single crystal samples are unsuitable for application for practical device fabrication. Although the polycrystalline SnSe samples have strengths in device applications because of their machinability and scalability. But, they have much poorer TE properties than single crystal samples. Therefore, achieving TE properties of polycrystalline SnSe samples similar to or higher than single crystal samples are one of the most important studies. In this presentation, we report the effect of Fe doping on the polycrystalline SnSe systems to improve their TE properties. The best performing system achieves a high ZT larger unity at 800K. |
