Lignocellulosic biomass has recently attracted much attention as a renewable energy resource. It can also be transformed into various valuable chemicals through a series of chemical and biological processes. Hemicelluloses, comprising of 20–40 wt% of lignocellulosic biomass, is a complex amorphous polymer consisting of xylose, arabinose, galactose, mannose, and glucose. Furfural can be produced via the dehydration of xylose and is used commercially in the various fields. The industrial process for furfural synthesis involves the uses of mineral acid catalysts. However, it causes severe environmental problems and corrosion hazards. To overcome these drawbacks, some eco-friendly processes have been developed. Various solid acid catalysts have been reported for the dehydration of xylose into furfural. In this presentation, some solid acid catalysts applied to this reaction will be introduced. |
