Systematic control over hydrogel properties via tuning of synthetic parameters |

Hydrogels are three-dimensional crosslinked polymer networks with high water content. They can be easily tuned to detect various stimuli via changes in their chemical and physical properties or via immobilization of stimuli responsive receptors onto their surfaces. The unique sol-gel transition and swelling-deswelling properties of hydrogels in presence of stimuli make them attractive materials for biological applications. Since the properties of the hydrogels greatly affect their swelling-deswelling behavior, we developed a synthetic protocol for monodisperse hydrogels with varying properties. In our study, we were able to synthesize a library of hydrogels with different sizes and crosslinking densities via simple adjustments to the synthetic conditions. |
