Preparation of PVA resin and films for optical applications |

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a water-soluble polymer having excellent optical properties and is used as a polarizing film for sunglasses and display devices. Low-temperature solution polymerization of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) was used for the production of economical and excellent optical films. PVA resin with a number-average degree of polymerization (Pn) of 4,400-5,700 was obtained through low temperature polymerization with a 4,4‘-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) (ACVA) initiator, which is advantageous for low temperature polymerization, and saponification reaction using basic catalyst. Also, VAM and bulky vinyl compounds were copolymerized to obtain high syndiotactic dyad content of PVA, which is favorable for the tensile properties and the degree of polarization. The film having a tensile strength of 82 MPa, elongation of 500% and transmittance of 91.5% was prepared by adding glycerol as a plasticizer using solution casting. Film preparation with excellent optical properties was available using PVA with high molecular weight and high syndiotactic dyad content. |
