Ethynyl-terminated sulfonated-fluorinated poly(arylene ether) copolymers (E-SFx-BP, x refers degree of sulfonation (DS) of the copolymers) were directly copolymerized from potassium 2,5-dihydroxybenzenesulfonate (SHQ), biphenol (BP) and decafluorobiphenyl (DFBP), followed by the reaction of ethynylphenol (EP). The sulfonation degree of E-SFx-BP copolymers was controlled by varying the mole ratio of SHQ and BP. These copolymers were dissolved in aprotic polar solvents such as DMAc, DMSO, DMF, and NMP, and after thermal crosslinking reaction, they were not soluble in any common organic solvents. The crosslinked membranes (C-SFx-BPs) show high proton conductivities at 30 and 90 oC in the range of of 53-144 mS/cm and 170-211 mS/cm, respectively. The methanol permeabilities of the membranes at room temperature were in the range of 21-128×10-8 cm2/s and show lower values than that of Nafion 212 (168×10-8 cm2/s). |
