Ion-exchange membranes have been widely used in fuel cells, desalination of seawater, recovery of valuable metals from effluents, production of ultra-pure water and other purposes. The polystyrene ion-exchange membrane was not durability because of brittleness. To improve flexibility, terpolymer based on styrene (St), hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and lauryl methacrylate (LMA) were synthesized by solution polymerization various monomer molar ratio. The cation-exchange membranes were prepared by thermal crosslinking and sulfonation reaction. The membrane’s chemical structures were investigated by FT-IR spectrometer, and the membrane’s basic properties such as degree of sulfonation (DS), ion-exchange capacity (IEC), water uptake and electrical resistance were measured for the prepared cation-exchange membranes. |
