This study was investigated to test the characteristics on generating the toxic gas of building interior materials, especially focusing on CO, which are the leading cause of fire deaths. The quantity of the CO generated was measured by 50 kW/m2 external heat flux and it was compared to the 50 ppm permissible exposure limit of OSHA. 4 wt% boric acid and ammonium pentaborate were used as flame retardants. The maximum yield of COmean (kg/kg) ranged from 0.064 to 0.070 kg/kg. The flame retardant combined with 4 wt% showed the same value as 0.067 kg/kg of the base wood. The CO toxicity of specimens combined with 4 wt% was found to decrease CO concentration which was 15.6% smaller than that of unpainted wood, 110.88 ppm. This was observed to decrease by 1.9 times compared with the permissible exposure limit of OSHA. The flame retardant combined with 4 wt% was found to decrease CO generation. |
