FT-IR spectroscopy has been used to investigate the chemical modification reaction mechanism of titanium isopropoxide by acetic acid. Most of the ester obtained by a ‘transesterification’ reaction rather than a direct esterification reaction. Free isopropanol reacts with bridging acetate ligands mainly, and created isopropyl acetate ester and Ti-OH bond. The choice of the starting alkoxides allowed a change of the reactivity and the functionality of the new precursors toward hydrolysis. In the wave number range 1020 to 1100 cm-1, only one kind of absorption band at about 1052 cm-1 has been found in a mixture of titanium isopropoxide with acetic acid from FT-IR analysis, while two kinds of absorption band at about 1034 and 1083 cm-1, respectively, attributed to terminal and bridging alkoxy groups, have been found in a mixture of tetra titanium butoxide and acetic acid. This result implies that trimer and/or dimer including the terminal and bridging alkoxy group can be generated readily in these latter mixture. In addition, we could know that progressive esterification to form isopropyl acetate ester results in a gradually increasing level of condensation and (Ti-O-Ti) oxo-bridging with time. |
