Erbium(III) complexes with porphyrin chromophores as light-absorbing ligands is attracted much attentions for polymer-based waveguide amplifiers operating at 1.5 mm. We have successfully synthesized erbium complexes with dendritic porphyrin ligands possessing two carboxylate anchors. All compounds have been isolated by chromatographic separations(silica and GPC columns), followed by structural characterizations by 1H-NMR, UV-Vis absorptions, fluorescence emissions, MALDI-TOF-MS, FT-IR and etc. By time-resolved fluorescence decay and NIR photoluminescence measurements with erbium-porphyrin complexes, we found that excitation energy of porphyrin ligand, upon excitation at maximum absortion band, is efficiently transferred to the central Er(III) moiety resulting in enhanced emissions of Er(III). We also report on optical amplification property of porphyrin-erbium complexes in polymer-based matrix as potential components for waveguide amplifiers. |
