To introduce inorganic materials into hydrophilic channels of Nafion® membrane, 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (3-APTES) reacted with sulfuric acid groups of Nafion. First, the desired quantity of 3-APTES was added to Nafion® polymer solution, and its solution was cast on a glass plate. The film was immersed in a solution containing formaldehyde which initiated the chemical reaction of 3-APTES and sulfuric acid group of Nafion® chain. And the obtained membranes were subject to react with phosphoric acid to bestow proton conductivity. Methanol permeability for modified membranes were found to be at least 50% lower than for Nafion®. The proton conductivity of the membrane was measured by 4-probe current interrupt method using impedance spectroscopy (IM6, Zahner) and showed maximum conductivity at 3 wt% of APTES, which was comparable with the conductivity of Nafion®. |
