PEMFC is considered to be a promising candidate for transportation applications because of its high power density, quick start up and simplicity in fabrication compared to other types of fuel cells. Hydrophobic gas diffusion electrodes in PEMFC are normally prepared by sintering PTFE[2] or PFEP on carbon paper or cloth. The sintering temperatures of PTFE and PFEP are about 360 and 340℃, respectively. In this work, we attempted to sinter PVdF(Poly vinylidene fluoride), instead of PTFE or PFEP on carbon paper since its sintering temperature is only around 170℃. PVdF, as the material for hydrophobic treatment on the electrodes of PEMFC, shows better electrochemical performance compared to that of the electrode treated with PTFE. The electrodes treated with PVdF is also easier to make due to its low sintering temperature.
