Discotic liquid crystals have been attracting increasing attention due to their particular transport properties related to electron and hole transfer, energy migration, etc. The hydrogen bonding is one of the powerful tools for assembling molecules and building organized molecular structures. The objective of this study is to design the hydrogen-bonded complexes that show the DLC behavior. Our strategy to obtain the complexes is to use hydrogen bonding between the core molecule (H-bond donor) and the peripheral groups (H-bond acceptor). 1,3,5-Trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol, PG) was used as the core molecules. 6-Alkoxyquinolines (AQn), trans-4-((4-alkoxybenzoyl)oxy)-4’-stilbazoles (ABSn) were synthesized for the peripheral units. The existence of the hydrogen-bonded complexes was studied by FT-IR spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties of complexes were investigated by DSC, POM and X-ray diffraction. Liquid crystalline phases of the hydrogen-bonded complexes were different from those of the peripheral units and the complexes prepared from two different components behaved as a single component. |
