The effect of the addition of barium and cobalt salts of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids on dynamic mechanical properties of poly(styrene-co-styrene sulfonate) ionomers was studied using DMTA. At 1:1 mol ratio of the ionic groups of the salts to that of the ionomers, the addition of salts led to negligible change in the matrix glass transition temperatures in both the barium and cobalt systems, the cluster glass transition temperatures (Tgc) remained almost constant in cobalt system, but increased considerably in barium system; with little effect of the alkyl chain lengths up to twelve number of the carbon atoms. Above this, however, the Tgc in both the systems decreased slightly. There was a slight increase in the ionic modulus in both the systems with no significant effect of the alkyl chain lengths of the salts. The effects of the variation of the weight percent of the selected dicarboxylates in barium systems had also been studied. The detailed results will be presented. |
