Polymer blends have been studied to improve the physicochemical properties of the individual components for industrial applications. In addition to opening up the possibilities for the applied fields, the miscibility of each component polymer is also of interest and importance. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) obtained by the saponification of poly(vinyl ester)s like poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl pivalate) is a linear semicrystalline polymer, which has been widely used as fibers for clothes and industries, films, membranes, medicines for drug delivery system, and cancer cell-killing embolic materials. Whether the hydroxyl groups are accommodated as an isotactic sequence or a syndiotactic sequence in the main chain of PVA, the stable conformation of the main chain is still the planar zigzag one which is also known as a stable one for polyethylene. In this study, to prepare syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA)/atactic PVA (a-PVA) blend films, water-soluble s-PVA and a-PVA with similar number-average degrees of polymerization of about 4000 were prepared. Miscibility of s-PVA/a-PVA blend films were examined.
