Conrolled Drug Delivery through Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel |

Hydrogel consisting of Poly(vinyl alcohol) and water soluble Poly(acrylic acid) were prepared from solvent casting method and crosslinked with thermo treatment. The crosslinked PVA/PAA hydrogel showed pulsatile pattern in swelling ratio by variable temperature, pH and contents of PAA. Moreover the permeation test of drug through the PVA/PAA hydrogel was conducted with diffusion cell. The permeability coefficients of indomethacin through PVA/PAA hydrogel also showed a temperature and a pH dependence. And we studied the releations between permeate behavior and water contents in crosslinked PVA/PAA hydrogel by variable pH. It seems that the permeation of indomethacin occured through water region in the swollen PVA hydrogel. The greater permeability coefficients of drug in neutral solution rather than acidic solution is probably due to the increase of water content and water region in the hydrogel.
