제목 Effects of Na-MMT on properties of Poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) Latices Prepared with Reactive Emulsifiers
초록 Recently, various methods to prepare nanocomposites from polymers and layered silicates such as montmorillonite(MMT) were reported. In order to disperse MMTs exfoliated or intercalated in matrix polymer and get nanocomposites showing excellent mechanical properties, in-situ polymerization was employed in previous studies. For the exfoliation or intercalation of MMTs in polymers strong, interactions between MMTs and polymers are required. If we prepare polymer latices via emulsion polymerization with reactive emulsifiers, we can get colloidal particles with functional group on the surfaces which may interact with MMTs and result in nanocomposites. We investigate effects of Na-MMT added after emulsion polymerization of poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) with reactive emulsifiers. We observed tremendous viscosity increase after the addition of Na-MMT into the latices. We found that particle size of latices increase after the addition of Na-MMT as shown in Figure 1. It is postulated that delaminated Na-MMTs adsorbed on the surface of latex particles. The structure of polymer-clay nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical and thermal properties of films were investigated by universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimeter, dynamic mechanical analyzer, and thermal gravimetric analyzer. Results of the characterization will be discussed.
