Given that many properties of thin polymeric materials are highly affected by the presence of the two interfaces of the film with the substrate and the atmosphere(surfaces and/or interfaces), a fundamental understanding of the influence of these factors on the structural aspects of polymers, such as their conformation, orientation and the local packing is essential. In this study, we investigated that the effect of solvent vapor on the developments of the surface morphologies and crystalline structures of poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] thin film. The surface morphologies and crystalline structures were measured using tapping mode atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction study. The effects of solvent vapor on surface morphologies and crystal structures were attributed to change of chain mobility. It indicates that increase of chain mobility induced by penetration of solvent vapor which competes against the substrate attraction force driven by adsorbed layer. |
