The Order-to-Disorder Transition of A Symmetric Polystyrene-block-Poly(2-vinyl pyridine) Copolymers with Cadmium Chloride |

The order-to-disorder transition (ODT) and lamellar spacing of a symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-P2VP) copolymer with various amounts of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) was investigated by rheometry, synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. PS-P2VP was synthesized by anionic polymerization. The CdCl2 can coordinate with the nitrogen in P2VP. Even though the amount of CdCl2 was very small (less than 0.01 vol%), the TODT of PS-P2VP coordinated with CdCl2 increased drastically. For instance, the TODT of a PS-PVP having volume fraction of CdCl2 of just 0.023 (thus, the molar ratio of [CdCl2]/[P2VP] = 0.01) increased as large as 10 oC compared with that of neat PS-P2VP. Furthermore, the lamellar domain spacing of this sample significantly increased. |
