Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Lanthanide(III)-Chelated Complexes and Their Novel Silicon-Based Copolymers |

Light-emitting organic electroluminescent devices with trivalent europium (Eu)-chelated complexes are of great interest because of their sharp red emission and potential applications to a flat panel display. But, red light-emitting device is not fully satisfied comparing with the color of blue and green. Recently, we have synthesized several kinds of new Eu (III)-chelated complexes and their silicon-based copolymer to obtain pure red emission and to improve the carrier-transport properties. Their carrier-transporting characteristics and efficient energy transfer from the ligand to the lanthanide ion are greatly dependent on the ligands. So, we designed and synthesized various ligands for investigation of energy transfer mechanism. The UV-visible absorption of all Eu (III)-chelated complexes appears at 280 ∼ 350 nm. Their photoluminescent spectra show the sharp narrow band at 611 nm, corresponding to the 5D0→7F2 transition of the trivalent Eu ion. Silicon-based copolymers containing Eu (III)-chelated complexes were synthesized using the Heck reaction between distyrylsilane monomer and various difunctionalized Eu (III)-chelated complexes. In this presentation, the synthesis and photophysical properties of their resulting copolymers will be discussed.
