제목 Preparation and characterization of sulfonated polystyrene-g-polypropylene composite electrolyte membranes for fuel cells
초록 Polymer electrolyte membranes have been studied for decades and nowadays perrfluorocarbon type membranes (Nafion) were accepted for commercial application. The weakness of perfluorocarbon polymer membranes still exists. Because it involves high material cost and methanol crossover in case of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) application new alternative membranes are needed.
In this study, sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) - g - polypropylene (PP) composite membranes were prepared by grafting sulfonated polystyrene on the surface of microporous polypropylene membranes via radio frequency (RF) plasma induced polymerization. Their physical and electrochemical properties were characterized for the application of polymer electrolyte membranes of DMFC.
Plasma induced grafting polymerization of styrene in the pore of PP substrate and it was confirmed by FTIR and SEM. The ion conductivity of sulfonated composite showed 50 - 70% and permeability coefficient 25-75% value of that of Nafion, respectively.
