Preparation of cationic polyelectrolyte by dispersion polymerization |

In this work, the cationic polyacrylamides were synthesized by dispersion polymerization. Dispersion polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in aqueous ammonium sulfate media using diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) as cationic co-monomer, poly(acryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PAOTAC) and poly(metacryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PMAOTAC) as polymeric stabilizer, and 2,2'-azobis(2-methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) as the initiator in 30~55°C. The copolymers were controlled by varying the relative concentration of salt, initiator, and stabilizer. These cationic polyelectrolytes were characterized by viscosity of 2wt% aqueous solution and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). The size and distribution of dispersed particles were observed by image analyzer. The particle size of the polymer was 2~15㎛. Molecular weight of cationic polyelectrolytes were more than 2×10-6g/mol. Dispersion stability of resulting polyelectrolytes was excellent in 29 wt% of salt concentrations in the reaction medium. |
