Preparation and Characterization of Epoxy Prepreg for an Earthquake-Resistant FRP |

High strength non-metallic super fibers, such as carbon, glass and aramid fibers, encapsulated in a polymer matrix in the form of wires, bars, strands or grids have shown great potentials as reinforcement for concrete, particularly where durability is of main concern. It is commonly known as fiber reinforced polymer or, in short, FRP. The external bonding of FRP onto the surface of concrete columns has aroused worldwide interest in strengthening and retrofitting deteriorated structures due to the high strength/stiffness to weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance of FRPs. In this work, thermal and mechanical properties of prepreg prepared using non-metallic fiber and epoxy resin for an earthquake-resistant FRP were investigated. The tensile and the flexural properties in the composites were evaluated using the strand and the short beam specimens. The thermal and flame resistant properties of prepreg were measured by DMA, TGA and 45 degree flammability tester. |
