Biodegradable fiber mats for the local delivery of doxorubicin |

As one of important antitumor reagents, doxorubicin (Dox) is widely used in clinical medicine. In the present study, Dox-loaded PLA fibers were successfully prepared by electrospinning technique. The morphology of the electrospun fiber was determined by using SEM. The average diameter of fibers was 560 nm. The Dox was entirely encapsulated inside the electrospun fibers. The drug was released from the medicated fibers via a diffusion mechanism it the early stage but through an enzymatic degradation mechanism thereafter. The released Dox maintained the original chemical structure and exhibited the same antitumor activity against liver cancer cells even after the emulsification and electrospinning procedure. The anticancer activity in vivo was evaluated in mice-bearing liver cancer by implantation the fiber mats inside tumor region. The animal test results confirmed Dox can be released and significantly inhibited the growth of liver cancer in mice. |
