Ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) has been many attentions for one of the soft electro-active material with a great potential application as like ‘artificial muscles’. Here, we investigated the IPMC actuating system with a biomimetic function, and developed the high-performance IPMC as artificial muscles. The IPMC employing the modified Nafion was prepared by the heat-compression method and impregnation/chemical reduction. Electromyography (EMG) signal was generated from the human flexor carpi ulnaris and extensor carpi ulnaris muscles. The experimental results showed that the prepared IPMCs are effectively controlled by the EMG signal, and have the improved actuation capability, especially higher force-generation by the mechanical characteristics compared with the traditional IPMC. We demonstrated that the development of the high-performance IPMC actuated by an implemented bio-signal control system has a possibility and a usability of the biomimetic artificial muscle. |
