Boronic/folic acid surface-modified GQD (BF-GQD, ca. 5.8nm in diameter) were fabricated by EDC/NHS chemistry. Due to their upconversion property, internalized BF-GQD reacted with folate receptor (FR) exhibited changed photo-induced electron transfer (PET), which induces increased fluorescence intensity making BF-GQD suitable for detection of intracellular H2O2 selectively over various ROS. Two cancer cell lines, MCF-7 (FR positive cell) and SK-BR-3 (FR negative cell) were used to confirm sensing capability. While MCF-7 cells exhibited PMA and BF-GQD dependent fluorescence increment, SK-BR-3 cells showed no changes owing to the absence of FR. The BF-GQD based sensor probes using upconversion property will offer potential biomedical applications. |
