Organic micropollutants (e.g. pesticides, pharmaceuticals) are increasingly found in water through agricultural, residential, and industrial discharge, and plant leakage from natural disasters. Those that are highly soluble (particularly charged ones) are difficult to remove rapidly by conventional adsorbents like activated carbon. We hereby report a study of oxyfluorinated and native activated carbon for the removal of the beta-blocker drug, propranolol. Oxyfluorinated Activated Carbon (OF-AC) has shown a dramatic increase in uptake capacities, surpassing the activated carbon proving that fluorination is key for the rapid uptake mechanisms. |
