ω–Functionalized poly(ethylene oxide) and transition metal nanoparticles |

We have focused on the synthesis of water-soluble block copolymers which have pH-responsive phase transition behaviors. To prepare the PEO-based macroinitiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), n-butyllithium-initiated ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide was performed in the mixture of benzene and DMSO at 40℃, followed by chain-end functionalization. Using proper electrophiles, the resulting PEO-based macroinitiator was converted into RAFT (reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer) agent carrying a dithioester group. Using the RAFT agent and AIBN, RAFT radical polymerization of sulfadimethoxinyl methacrylamide (SDM) and N-phenylmaleimide (N-PMI) was successfully performed in toluene at 90℃ for 6h. Poly(ethylene oxide) -b- poly(SDM -co- N-PMI) was successfully utilized for preparation of metal oxide nanoparticles such as ZnO or Fe3O4. |
