Facile preparation of TiO2/activated carbon fibers composites as electrode materials for capacitive deionization |

TiO2/activated carbon fibers (ACFs) composites are prepared as electrode materials for capacitive deionization (CDI) by facile process. ACFs are treated with different concentration of titanium isopropoxide and calcined by ultrasonication. The morphology and crystallinity of prepared samples are observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. Contact angles of the electrodes are also measured from water drop on the electrodes to estimate hydrophilic property of the ones. The specific capacitance and desalination performance of TiO2/ACFs composites are estimated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and CDI experiments, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the TiO2/ACFs composite electrode led to a 70% improvement in salt adsorption capacity as compared to untreated electrode. It is attributed that TiO2 doped on ACF surface enhances the wettability of electrode and increases ion-transport rate within ACF pores. |
