Methacrylate Based Triblock Copolymer Elastomer for Actuator Application |

A-B-A trilock copolymer elastomers of MMA-b-DMA-b-MMA (PMDM) were synthesized by in-situ sequential living radical polymerization of DMA followed by MMA from a difunctional initiator with Ruthenium based atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) system. Obtained PMDM triblock copolymers with different block weight fractions showed well defined molecular weights with narrow molecular weight distributions (PDI ≤ 1.2). Well-organized morphologies from BCC to LAM were obtained depending on the different block weight fractions both in bulk and in thin film states. PMDM triblock copolymers with lower PMMA weight fractions showed elastomeric properties, which demonstrated excellent actuation performances in comparison to conventional SEBS/oil elastomer system, especially with higher molecular weights series, due to their polar methacrylate groups, softness, and well-defined microstructures. |
