Every year, over 2 million children are reported to have been killed due to bacterial infections. Furthermore, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged as a major threat to public health worldwide. Thus, there is an urgently need to develop novel classes of antibacterial compounds that can overcome the antibiotic resistance of bacteria including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and ESBL-EC (extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli). In this study, PDAs derived from imidazolium- and imidazole-monomers display instantaneously dual colorimetric and fluorometric changes from blue to red, upon contact with bacteria, followed by bacterial growth inhibition. Bacterial invasion into the human intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2) by Salmonella Typhimurium was significantly reduced by the PDAs while maintaining the viability of the host cells. Our results suggest that the PDA has great potential as a probe-killer for bacteria. |
