Modification of castor oil via thiol-ene reaction for a polyurethane building block |

The present work highlights the modification of vegetable oil via thiol-ene chemistry. The effect of thiol concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature were examined. The primary hydroxyl groups were introduced in castor oil through photo-induced thiol-ene reaction. The 1H-NMR analysis confirms the successful introduction of primary hydroxyl group in castor oil. The modified castor oil was used as a polyol for polyurethane (PU). The thermal and mechanical properties of the Pus were investigated. The glass transition temperatures of the PUs were higher than that of PU from unmodified castor oil.
