Block copolymer brushes on the nanoparticle surface enable the precise positioning of particles within polymer matrix by determining their inherent property as well as interaction with the matrix. In this talk, we will discuss their applications using two different examples: (1) block copolymer coated gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for surfactants and (2) pH responsive block copolymer coated quantum dots (QDs). In the first example, thermally stable Au NPs are used as the surfactants in the polystyrene/poly (triphenylamine) blend, which lead initially to a decrease in droplet size, a consequence of decreasing interfacial tension depending on NPs volume fraction and size. In the second example, continuous conducting polymer films were prepared succefully by polymer-coated Au NPs as surfactant with ultralow percolation thresholds. In the third example, we have developed a ratiometric pH sensor using pH responsive and fluorescent diblock copolymer coated CdSe/ZnS QDs. |
