Synthesis and Characterization of Hydrogels Containing Bacterial Cellulose |

Plant biomass is the most abundant renewable resource on earth and a promising resource that can replace fossil oil for sustainable production of biofuel and chemicals. Among many efforts made for decades on utilization of the plant biomass, interest has grown in bacterial cellulose (BC) that is an ex-cellar product of vinegar bacteria since the BC produced from the plant biomass by this biological process has been found to be pure cellulose consisting of random assembly of microfibrils of less than 10 mn diameter. In this study, we synthesized BC-based hydrogels by acetal forming chemical crosslinking reaction. The BC was prepared from a culture medium containing Gluconacetobacter sp. KCG-2 at 28 oC for 14 days. Swelling/shrinkage behavior and mechanical properties of the synthesized BC-based hydrogels were evaluated in terms of crosslinking density of hydrogels. |
