제목 In Situ Preparation and Characterization of Polystyrene/MWNT Nanocomposites by Miniemulsion Polymerization
초록 Successful applications of organic/inorganic composites require well-dispersed nanotubes with good adhesion with host matrix, which, unfortunately, is not easily realized. Processing is rendered difficult by poor solubility of CNTs. Moreover, inherently weak nanotube-polymer interactions result in poor interfacial adhesion, which can lead to nanotube aggregation within the matrix, yielding very poor enhancement in physical properties.
Chemical modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) made it improve effectively the solubility and dispersion of nanotubes.1,2 In addition, modified MWNTs can provide bonding sites to the polymer matrix, which prevent the MWNTs aggregation.
In this study, we show that polystyrene-nanotube (PS-MWNTs) nanocomposites can be prepared in situ under miniemulsion polymerization conditions, utilizing an aqueous cationic surfactant solution - slightly above the critical micelle concentration (CMC).3 The characterization of PS/MWNTs nanocomposites prepared by miniemulsion polymerization technique was carried out in terms of CNT dispersion and corresponding properties of the PS/MWNTs nanocomposites were analyzed by various techniques.
