Bioceramic scaffolds such as biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), composed of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), have been highly studied as bone substitutes. They possess similar mineral composition to bone with excellent biocompatibility, degradability, and osteoconductivite property. Herein, porous BCP scaffolds were loaded with foamed soya-gelatin hydrogel to improve strength of the scaffold. In addition, soya is known for its osteogenic and macrophage modulating property. As a whole, the protein foamed scaffold would have sufficient mechanical strength, and would possess both osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties, which are essential considerations for bone substitutes. |
