Nanobrush-structured oligomers (NSOs) were successfully synthesized using non-toxic and biocompatible material, ε-caprolactone, as a brush material in lab-scale. After confirming that NSOs had high plasticizing efficiency and migration stability, large-scale synthesis of NSOs was carried out with a pilot-plant. Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sheets plasticized with NSOs were prepared using a commonly used PVC manufacture process and compared with the most usually used plasticizer, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). In this study, NSOs provided satisfactory processability, and properties of PVC/NSOs showed better or similar values than that of PVC/DEHP. Especially, PVC/NSOs had higher flexibility with over 320% of elongation at breaks and migration stability with under 0.6% of weight loss in hexane extracables testing, while PVC/DEHP had only 278% of elongation at breaks and 9.98% of weight loss. These results clearly indicated that NSOs can be used as green plasticizers |
