Preparation and characterization of polymer coatings on titanium implants for orthopedic applications |

Titanium implants are widely used in biomedical applications due to their properties such as high-strength to weight ratio, low modulus, low density, and biocompatibility. Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) is the main component of bone tissues, and thus exhibits excellent biocompatibility and osseointegration properties. The paper presents the preparation of polymer coatings on pure titanium for orthopedic applications. The substrates are first pretreated with acid solution and then coated with polymer by dip coating technique. The surface morphology, chemical composition, phase and in-vitro biocompatibility was then studied for coatings and compared with uncoated substrate. The results revealed that the coating is uniform throughout the substrate. The coating exhibits no cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility in response to pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells.
