Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are attracting much more attention for their potential as clean and mobile power sources in the future. It is reported that many researches have investigated transition metal/carbons composites as electrode catalysts, and nickel is one of powerful catalyst as electrode materials. In this work, the graphite nanofibers (GNFs)-supported metallic nickel nanoparticles were prepared as electrode materials for DMFCs. Prior to use GNFs, the purification of the GNFs in an acidic solution was performed in order to remove all impurities. The nickel deposition was archived by an electroless nickel plating with various of plating time in the range of 2 to 20 min. The Ni content and deposited morphology on the GNF surfaces were observed by ICP and AFM, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and AC impedance measurements were used to estimate an electrochemical activity of the Ni/GNFs prepared. |
