Effects of Surface Modifying Agent (SMA) Containing Fluorine Atoms on the Polymer Dispersed Cholesteric Liquid Crystal |

To decrease the driving voltage of polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal (PDCLC), we synthesized and introduced a fluoroalkyl terminated polyurethane (PU) oligomer as a surface modifying agent (SMA), hoping to decrease the interface energy between LC and polymer. It has been found that the addition of SMA significantly reduces the droplet size of LC and driving voltage of the film, implying that the SMA molecules are effectively exposed to the interfaces due to their lower surface energy which is caused by the lower free energy of fluorine atoms and lower molecular weight of the LC. A peak broadening in short wavelength range and a blue shift by the matrix shrinkage were also noted. |
