Observed Wettability of Various Fluoropolymers |

The interfacial wettabilities of various fluoropolymers were evaluated using a combination of non-polar, polar protic and polar aprotic contacting liquids. The wettabilities for the polar liquids (polar protic or polar aprotic) revealed that partially fluorinated polymers were more wet than fully fluorinated polymers: (PTFE, FEP, PFA) > ETFE > ECTFE > PVDF. The different wettability of partially fluorinated polymers indicated the existence of non-ideal dispersive interactions (such as dipole-dipole and hydrogen-bonding). The non-polar hydrocarbon liquids exhibited slight different order of wettabilities: FEP > (PFA PTFE) > ETFE > PVDF > ECTFE. Also, the wettability of PVDF was almost the same as that of ECTFE for very slight polar liquids such as diiodometahane and 1-bromonaphthalene. |
