NaBH4 is a powerful reducing agent used in a wide variety of organic and inorganic nanomaterials synthesis. However, as soon as the solution is prepared, hydrogen gas is released and decomposed slowly. Thus, the ability of NaBH4 as a reducing agent varies with time, and consequently affects the reproducibility of chemical reactions. To quantitatively investigate this phenomenon of NaBH4 aging, we used the synthesis of gold nanorods as a model system. A continuous flow micro-reactor system was used to analyze particle shape changes over time. We found that the shape and aspect ratio of the gold nanorods were highly dependent on the injection time of the prepared NaBH4 solution. Experimental results show that the efficiency of NaBH4 as a reducing agent has a great influence on the seed formation of the gold nanorods and consequently determines the final shape. |
