Cholesteric liquid crystals draw great attention due to their potential in various applications as key materials for display. They have a helical molecular orientation which is induced by a chiral dopant molecules mixed with nematic liquid crystals. The helical structure of cholesteric liquid crystals gives rise to the fundamental property of selective reflection of light. They reflect circularly polarized incident light of the same handedness as the cholesteric helix. The wavelength band of the reflected polarize light is depended on the helical pitch, which is strongly dependent on the molecular properties of the chiral dopant. We have designed and synthesized a new polymerizable chiral dopant with high helical twisting power (HTP) as well as a decent solubility in nematic liquid crystal hosts. We present fundamental characterizations of the new chiral dopant and its copolymerization with the host reactive mesogen (RM), which was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. |
