Characteristics of sulfonated styrenic pentablock copolymer/ionic liquid membranes and their IPMC actuators |

Herein, sulfonated styrenic pentablock (SSPB) copolymer/ionic liquid (IL) membranes were formed by incorporating four imidazolium ILs with different cation sizes, i.e. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium, and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium cations were combined with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. The SSPB copolymer was poly((t-butyl-styrene)-b-(ethylene-r-propylene)-b-(styrene-r-styrene sulfonate)-b-(ethylene-r-propylene)-b-(t-butyl-styrene)). Compared with the Nafion counterpart, the resulting nanostructured SSPB/IL membranes showed higher ionic conductivities, especially with large cations of IL. This may be attributed to the big ion-conduction channels (ca. 20 nm) in the polyelectrolyte. The SSPB/IL membranes also had mechanical strengths much higher than those of the Nafion/IL membranes. IPMCs constructed with the SSPB/IL membranes generated a soft bending motion with stable actuation in air. |
