5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is an antineoplastic agent of extensive use in clinical chemotherapy for the treatment of advanced breast cancer and adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract. However, it also has strong side effects such as gastrointestinal toxicity and delivery problems. In this study, a new monomer conjugated with 5-fluorouracil, salicylic acid which is widely valued for their analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties was synthesized, characterized and polymerized directly via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with various comonomers. The in vitro cytotoxicities of 5-FU and the synthesized monomer and polymers were evaluated with mouse mammary carcinoma (FM3A), mouse leukemia (P388), and human histiocytic lymphoma (U937) as cancer cell lines and mouse live cells (AC2F) as a normal cell line. |
