Microalgae are a promising source for proteins, lipids and carbohydrates that can be used for biofuel production. The most distinct hurdle of biofuel production from microalgae is its high production cost. For economical production of microalgae-based biofuels, it is necessary to completely use all biomass components. In this study, major components of microalgae were successfully utilized for biofuel production. First, biodiesel were synthesized from microalgae, Dunaliella tertiolecta in the presence of DMC and immobilized lipase via a one-step lipid extraction and transesterification process. Second, carbohydrate of the lipid-extracted microalgae biomass was utilized as the carbon source for ethanol fermentation. Lastly, the residual biomass was converted to bio-oil through fast pyrolysis. |
