Biodiesel has attracted great attention as a renewable, biodegradable and nontoxic fuel. Biodiesel is conventionally produced through chemical andenzymatical methods. In this study, six types of catalyst (enzyme, whole cell, heavy metal powder, heavy metal immobilized on chitosan or crab shell, and alkali catalyst) were applied to produce biodiesel and they were compared each other. Inhibitory effect of methanol, glycerol and water, and effect of molar ratio of methanol to oil on the conversion rate and yield were investigated. In addition, a novel method employing both enzyme and heavy metal was also suggested and its feasibility was investigated. |
