Microbial fuel cells(MFC) is an innovative environmental energy system, however, power output is not so great that it needs improvement of power generation for practical implementation. In this study, it is hypothesized that increasing area of current collector attached on the cathode electrode increases power generation. To prove this hypothesis, a single-chamber cubic MFC was tested with carbon fiber brush anode and the Pt-PTFE coated carbon cloth cathode. Four different structures of current collector (CC) were tested. Maximum power density (1,136 mW/m2) and current density (3,752 mA/m2) of an MFC with a broad stainless steel plate and a stainless-steel-mesh current collector is higher than those (1,055 mW/m2 and 3,672 mA/m2) of an MFC with a Ti-wire electrode connector. We concluded that increasing current collector contacts increase power and current generation of MFCs. |
