In this study, we have developed near-infrared light (NIR)-triggered bubble-generating poly(lactic acid) (PLA) nanoparticles for drug release. PLA nanoparticles containing melanin, perfluorohexane (PFH), and methotrexate (MTX) were prepared by a simple emulsification method. The mean diameter of PLA nanoparticles was 76.02 nm and the drug loading efficiency was 68.2%. When exposed to a NIR 808 laser, the temperature of the PLA nanoparticle solution rose by 43.9 °C. MTX release from the PLA nanoparticles was 81.99% of total drug for 24 h after the NIR laser irradiation. In contrast, without NIR laser irradiation, MTX was released from the PLA nanoparticles to 67.3% of the total loaded drug for 24 h. Overall, the PLA nanoparticles can control the drug release using the NIR laser and further can be applied as an ultrasound contrast agent, which can be effectively used in diagnostic and therapeutic fields. |
