To realize the integration of biological and non-biological systems at the nano- or micro-level, various fundamental researches should be established, such as study on the interactions between biological and non-biological systems, chemical and physical modifications at the substrate surface (including pattern generation or growth of cells), controls over specific bioactivity and biomimetic performance, and integration in devices with new potential applications, and health and environmental risks. The presentation discusses the recent research progresses done by my laboratory focusing on the use of surface organic chemistry as a tool for controlling the interfaces between biological and non-biological systems: development of new reactions on self-assembled monolayers, coating of substrates with polymers via surface-initiated polymerization, development of stimuli-responsive systems, and synthesis of nano-hydrid systems. |
