The functional units composed of heteroatoms or inorganic clusters are defined as an “element-block”, and unique properties originated from these elements can be expected by introducing “element-blocks” in the polymeric materials. Based on this new idea for material design, we have challenged to synthesize new “element-blocks” and to apply them for preparing advanced functional materials. In this presentation, recent progresses on the development of optical sensors utilizing “element-block polymers” will be illustrated. By using silica “element-blocks”, the discrimination for the size of PM2.5-like particles was achieved. As another example, various types of optical sensors were fabricated based on the chromic luminescent properties of the “element-block polymers”. The design concepts and mechanisms in these chemical sensors will be demonstrated. |
